In the recent past Economy of this country mostly depended on its main export items such as Tea, Rubber and Coconut where as the contemporary Economy depends on other exports such as gems, flowers, Cut flowers, Ready made garments etc. and a great deal on Tourism industry.Craftsmanship in Sri Lanka is of the highest standard in producing elaborate, elegant and laborious works of Art to attract thousands of visitors to this isle every year. These sales have contributed a great amount towards the economy of the country.

   TROPICAL FRUITS

Sri Lanka is rich with a wide range of tropical fruits that grows in plantations as much as in backyards of most locals. The sweet succulent fruits can be used to making puddings and cakes, processed into making jam or cordial and even served merely as a traditional dessert. Tourists as much as locals, enjoy various types of mangoes and bananas as well as other popular fruits such as Rambutan, Pineapples, oranges, papaws, guavas, melons, grapefruit and avocados. In most hotels fruits are used to garnish local and exotic dishes as well as to make elaborate and graceful creations that are displayed mostly with buffets.

  SRI LANKA SPICES

Many Spice Gardens can be found to the north and west part of Kandy. Centuries ago bilateral trading was mainly based on the range of spices the island had to offer, which in turn attracted many sailors and tradesman from nearby continents making Sri Lanka a popular commercial destination. cinnamon was very popular in Europe.

Among spices on trade cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, cloves, ginger and pepper dominate the market. Most of these spices are used in culinary where mouth watering hot and spicy local dishes, with an irresistible aroma fortified with herbs offers much more than a mere meal.

One of the main exports of Sri Lanka that was introduced by the British gained much of the popularity for its unique tropical taste to keep its demand high above other Asian countries for years. It is a way to display hospitality among locals as much as for tourists from all over the world

For generations the techniques and methodology of carving and painting have been well preserved and still being used when producing contemporary works of art. Minutely and elaborately designed products acts as a magnet to attract tourists from all over the world. Increasing number of craft shops filled with wooden masks, Batik paintings, stone and wooden carvings of statues, stone - embedded works etc. makes the world discover hidden talents and unique aesthetic values of Sri Lankans.
